CAPTAIN’S LOG – 29 JANUARY 2016

Well, we arrived in Puntarenas this morning – early!  The ship was cleared before 0900, but the processing of government shore passes took quite some time because they lacked alphabetical order. 693 cards out of order?  No problem.

The weather is perfect – few clouds, hot temperatures and a light breeze.  Now the cadets and crew are streaming ashore – off to new adventures in this beautiful part of the world.  I see quite a few surf boards going ashore, most likely heading to Jaco Beach, just south of here.  The town is small, but has a long beach right ahead of the ship – as well as many small local restaurants. If someone is looking for the Hilton or the Intercontinental, they will look a long time.

I’ve heard a few comments about the possible Zika virus risk.  We are prepared, having briefed the cadets and crew thoroughly on the risks and the prevention –we provide effective bug repellent at the gangway as well as in packs for the cadets that will go on excursions into the rain forest tomorrow and Sunday.
